Makar Sankranti and Pongal Rangoli Patterns

Makar Sankranti is a popular Hindu festival celebrated across India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Bangaldesh and Nepal. It is a Harvest Festival which signifies the advent of Spring season in India. It marks the beginning of Harvesting season in India. It is an auspicious event according to the Hindu festival.

Makar Sankranti or Sankranti is known by different names across India. It is called Sankranthi in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. It is called Pongal in Tamil Nadu and Uttarayan in Gujarat. Its is called by the name Maghi in Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. Lohri is celebrated in Punjab a day prior to Sankranti. Sankranti generally falls on either 14 or 15 January of every year. The date of celebrating the festival does not vary much from year to year as it follows Gregorian calendar and will be celebrated at some places on 13 or 14 January.

Besides India it is celebrated in many other countries and is called with different religious names as listed below.

Nepal - Maghe Sankranti
Thailand- Songkran
Laos- Pi Ma Lao
Myanmar- Thingyan
Cambodia- Moha Sangkran
Sri Lanka- Pongal, Uzhavar Thirunal

In India every state celebrate it in a different way, while in North India Kite Flying is a common sight at this festival, in South India it is celebrated over 3 to 4 days. For example in Andhra Pradesh the festival is celebrated over 4 days. It starts with Bhogi on first day, Makara Sankranti on 2nd day, Kanuma on 3rd day and  Mukkanuma on the final fourth day.
